This inspiring new office space for the Colombo Municipal Council is one of our favourite projects. It is respectful to its civic companion: the iconic Colombo Town Hall, while confidently establishing its own distinct architectural expression. Rather than standing alone, the building is conceived in dialogue with the existing civic landmark.
The stepped profile of the building carefully chisels out volume, freeing up prime ground-floor space, allowing enhanced landscaping and generous, shaded waiting areas at street level. Perforated façade screens keep the interiors cool while animating the spaces within, casting floral shadows that shift throughout the day.
Slender veranda columns resonate the arcade of the existing council building, reinforcing a sense of continuity. As boundaries between interior and exterior, formal and informal, old and new begin to dissolve, the through-road, verandas, and landscaped areas merge into a single, lively public space within the council grounds.
